Richard E. Newman, Sr., 83, of near Georgetown, Delaware passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at home. Mr. Newman was born on March 28, 1926 in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the late Paul B. and Hazel A. Publicover Newman.
He was a heavy equipment operator working with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #542, Philadelphia, PA retiring in 1988 after 27 years of service. Mr. Newman was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post #28, Oak Orchard/Riverdale near Millsboro.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years Elizabeth Chambers Newman, a son Richard E. (Sharon) Newman, Jr. of Laurel, DE, a daughter, Jodie Marie (Edward) Quinn of Middletown, DE, three step sons, Raymond F. Chambers, Jr. of Georgetown, Stephen M. (Joyce Shuster) Chambers of New Castle, DE, and Dale I. (Sherri) Chambers of Wilmington, DE, a sister Mabel E. Murray of Billirica, MA, a nephew William Newman of Magnolia, MA, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Mae Newman in 1983 and a brother Warren L. Newman.
Services will be 11 AM, Saturday, March 6th at the Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N DuPont HWY, New Castle, Delaware; Friends may call one hour prior the service. Interment with honors will follow service. A memorial service will be 1-3PM on Sunday, March 7th at the American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion RD, Millsboro, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to support the American Legion Post #28, 31768 Legion RD, Millsboro, DE 19966 in memory of Richard Newman.
