Agnes G. Hurley (Granny) passed away on June 22, 2018. Born on November 7, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Hansel A. Geoghegan and Mabel Airey Geoghegan. After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1948, she attended Easton Memorial Hospital school of Nursing. She enjoyed a long and productive professional career, working as an LPN in various settings until the age of 73.
Agnes’ faith was always first in her life. As a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Dagsboro, she served many years as the director of the Vacation Bible School, a Sunday School teacher and counsellor for their MYF. She was a member of the Friends of Prince Georges Chapel and for the last several years an active member of The Community Church of Oak Orchard.
She was a member of Frankford Chapter #12 OES, serving twice as Worthy Matron and in other positions for the Grand Chapter of Delaware. It was her love of this organization and her dedication to working with young adults that she was instrumental in forming Bethel #10, International Order of Job’s Daughters and served as their first Bethel Guardian. She went on to become the Grand Guardian of the state of Delaware.
Moving from Cambridge to Dagsboro, Agnes became an active community member. She was active in local and state politics and volunteering for numerous community activities. This love of the area led her to eventually open a craft store, Granny’s Crafts and with other local businesses, formed the Dagsboro Area Chamber of Commerce. She served as this organizations first President.
Agnes favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends. An avid bowler, she was a member of a league at Millsboro Lanes well into her 80s. She enjoyed attending local sporting events to watch her great-grandchildren participate and shared a love of watching the Baltimore Orioles with her family.
Agnes was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sidney. She is survived by her children, H. Crawford Hurley (Jerry), Laura Lynn Gambrill (Tom) and Cindy O Betts (Mark), 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and her beloved cat, Muffin.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of her Life is planned for Sunday, July 8, 2018 from 3 pm-5 pm at Millsboro Fire Company 109 E. State Street Millsboro, DE.
