Johnnie S Jernigan

January 29, 1930 ~ July 11, 2018 (age 88)

Johnnie S. Jernigan, born January 29, 1930 entered into rest and departed this earthly life on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at home in Frankford, Delaware with his wife Betty at his side. He was 88 years old.

Born and raised in Midway Alabama, he was the son of the late  Susanna Jernigan Moore and raised along with Timothy Jernigan

He was educated in the Public Schools of Alabama.

 In his late teens he moved from Midway, Alabama and relocated to Pocomoke Maryland. There he met and fell in love with Betty Feddiman. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on July 11, 1948 and six children were born in this union.

Johnnie was employed by Mountaire Farms operating in a manager’s position for 35 years upon retiring in 1995.

Johnnie loved scrapping and hunting, but his greatest passion was his garden. You could always find him working in his garden or just sitting and overseeing it. Aside from that, Johnnie would be skinning his catches, fiddling with some scrap metal he collected, or sitting right out front of his residence with his wife watching the cars go by.

 

Johnnie as he was affectionately known around Frankford, was admired by his flannel shirts and cap, as well as driving his pickup below the speed limit. He was also kindhearted, by offering transportation to those in need making sure they reached their destinations.

 

In addition to his parents, siblings and two sons Frederick Lee and Timothy Jernigan he was also preceded by a grandson, Quincy Nocks.

 

He leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Betty Helen Feddiman Jernigan of Frankford, DE; six children: Herman Jernigan of Millsboro, DE; Anna Mae Jernigan of Frankford,  DE; Jerome Jernigan of Dagsboro, DE; Helen Custis of Seaford, DE; Vanessa Jernigan Purnell (William) of Millsboro, DE; and Alison Jernigan of Frankford, DE. A nephew whom he raised as a son, Hubert (Drag) Jamison of Frankford, DE.  He was also blessed with 22 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

 

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE  19966, where friends may call from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM for viewing and visitation.  Apostle Larry Morris will officiate the service.  Burial will follow in Zoar Golden Acres, Bishopville, MD.
