Obituary of Pecita  Minunette Norwood Lonewolf

Advocate for Native Americans

 

Pecita Minunette Norwood Lonewolf, 82, of Millsboro, DE passed away in the care of Harbor Healthcare on April 7, 2018.  She was an accomplished advocate and servant of the Native American Tribes.  She was born in Baltimore Hundred, Millsboro on January 17, 1936 to the late Robert S. and Jeanette Mosley Johnson Norwood. She was a graduate of Harmon School, and the Haskell Institute (now Haskell University).  She took a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an employment guidance counselor for American Indians throughout the US.

 

She married Donald William Lonewolf, of the Kiowa Tribe in Oklahoma, and raised two children.  Mr. Lonewolf was incapacitated as result of an auto accident, and she had to care for him till he passed away in 1972.  She went on to become a program specialist for the Department of Health and Human Services for administration of Head Start Programs for American Indian children all over the country.  Eventually she became the Director of Economic Development Programs on Indian Reservations in the US and foreign territories.  After 32 years of federal service, she moved back to Millsboro, and was very active in her own tribe, the Nanticokes.  She served many offices in her beloved Seventh Day Adventist Church in Millsboro.

Her hobbies were: service to the community, family and church; Indian crafts, and a love of reading.

 

She is survived by her two sons: Donald Martell Lonewolf, and his wife Laura, of Grants Pass, OR; and Merril D. Lonewolf, of Millsboro.  She has three sisters: Detsy Wright, of Millsboro; Jitter Norwood, of Oklahoma City, OK and Splinter Norwood, also of Oklahoma City.  Also surviving are two grandchildren: Donald Lonewolf, Jr.; and Sim Lonewolf, Sr.  There are three great-grandchildren: Aaliyah Lonewolf; Sim Lonewolf, Jr.; and Quinn Lonewolf.

 

A funeral service is planned for Noon on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the Millsboro Seventh Day Adventist Church, with a viewing and visitation with the family from 11:00 AM till 12:00 noon.  Pastor Stephan Boyce will officiate, and the Eulogist will be Pastor Colby Matlock.   Interment follows in the SDA Cemetery which is beside the church.
