Obituary of William Augustus Davis



William Augustus Davis, known as “Gussie” to all his friends passed away at home in the care of his family and Compassionate Care Hospice.  He was 84.  Gussie was born on October 25, 1935 to the late Charles M. and Minnie M. Street Davis in Millsboro, DE.  Gussie was a veteran of the US Army from 1957 until 1959. He married the late Lillie Roma Wright on March 16, 1973 and together they raised their daughter, Sandra Y. Norwood.  Over the years he worked at Parker Block; Townsend, Inc.; and was also a car transporter for Millsboro Ford.  He was meticulous in cleaning vehicles and tinkering on cars.  He was devoted to his cat and dog: Midnight and Zoe. He enjoyed church, and served as an usher and trustee.  Gussie was a problem solver!


In addition to his parents, Gussie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillie, who passed away in 2012, and Gussie was also preceded by his siblings: Lester, Layton, Clarence, Reginald, and Carmenthus Davis. 


Gussie is survived by his daughter: Sandra Norwood; and his grand-daughter: Lakota Norwood.  He is also survived by three siblings: Walter Davis; Annie George; and Cherita Davis.  Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Jean Davis (N.J.); Janice Davis (DE); and Calantha Davis (NJ);  and surviving brothers-in-law: Charles Wright (Odette); Dallas Wright (Chris) and Robert Wright (Anita).  Other survivors include a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.


A funeral service and Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Harmony United Methodist Church on John J. Williams Highway, Millsboro, DE.  The viewing and visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon, with the funeral service starting at Noon.  Pastors Charlotte Nichols; Karen Mumford; and Claudia Waters will conduct the service.  Interment follows in Harmony UMC Cemetery, with the conferring of Military Honors.  Floral tributes are welcomed.
