Obituary of Leon T. Baker, Sr

Business Man, WW2 Veteran

Leon T. Baker, Sr., of Millsboro, passed away at his home on January 5, 2020.  He was 95 years old.  He was born on March 12, 1924 in Gumboro, DE to the late Norman C.  and Sara West Baker. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris in 1981 after 37 years of marriage and one brother, Ivan R. Baker.

He was a high school graduate, and after school married his sweetheart, Doris.  Leon led a fascinating life, having served in five major battle campaigns in World War Two, including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of Ardennes, known commonly as the “battle of the bulge.” He was wounded in combat.  After the war, he and his brother Vernon co-founded Baker’s Hardware, which is a successful business today in Millsboro.  With his wife, they raised their children, family, and grandchildren whom he adored. Leon was a man of few words, but a caring family man.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and became a well-known fixture in Millsboro, as well as a respected member of the community.

Leon is survived by his children: Linda L. Pusey (Bill), of Millsboro; L. Thomas Baker, Jr. (Meredith), of Florida; and Alan Scott Baker (Donna) of Millsboro.  Also surviving are his grandchildren: Tish Pusey; Ryan Pusey (Sarah) both of Millsboro; Shane Baker (Jessica) from Georgetown; and Dylan Baker, from Millsboro.  There are six great-grandchildren: Luke; Lee Ann; Kalyn; Lance; Christian; and Charlotte.  Leon is also survived by his brother and business partner: Vernon Baker, also of Millsboro.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE.  Viewing and visitation are from 11:00 AM till 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2020.  The funeral service follows at 1:00 PM with Rev. Karin Tunnell officiating.  Interment follows at Millsboro Cemetery with Military Honors by the US Army.
