Alton E. Lynch, Sr.'s Obituary
Alton E. Lynch, Sr. “Toby”, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at his residence in Gumboro, Delaware. He was 84.
Born on July 25, 1941, in Gumboro, Toby was the son of the late Paul Alvin Lynch and Beatrice Helen (Collins) Lynch. A lifelong resident of the town he loved, Toby was proud of his roots and the life he built through hard work, determination, and grit.
Toby began working at a very young age and, true to his character, never really stopped. He held many jobs throughout his life and was a true jack of all trades—there was very little he couldn’t fix, build, or figure out. Known as an exceptionally hard worker, Toby had a strong will and a firm way of doing things, guided by experience and confidence earned over a lifetime of labor.
Beyond his work ethic, Toby was a natural storyteller and a good-natured prankster, always ready with a joke or tale that left others laughing. In his early years he enjoyed farming, hauling grain with his own trucks, building his house, but his greatest passion was music. Toby loved playing the guitar, especially finger-picking old country tunes, a sound that felt as timeless as he was.
In his younger years, Toby made history as the first tractor-trailer driver for Perdue—back before he technically should have been driving. His love for horses and racing led him to Ocean Downs, where he enjoyed watching horse races, and he also spent many years working as a horseman in the industry.
Toby cherished his routines and friendships. He enjoyed bringing his guitar to Lacey’s to play and could often be found at JT’s Diner in Pittsville for breakfast with his regular group of friends, where he was known for cracking jokes, telling stories, and holding court at the table.
In addition to his parents, Toby is preceded in passing by his siblings: Pete Lynch (Norma), Bill Lynch, and Roland Lynch, Patsy Shockley (Dale), Tootsie Dorman (Bob), and Lou White (David).
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Veronica Lynch; his children: Alton “Little Toby” Lynch, Jr., (Carolyn), Mac Lynch (Nicole), and Martin Lynch (Colleen); his grandchildren: Jason Lynch, Megan LeCates, MacKayla Lynch, Tomyra Withrow, and Finley and Mora Lynch, and Heather Williams; his great grandchildren: Luke, Landon, Elle and Noah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Watson Funeral Home & Crematorium, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, DE 19966, where a Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow services at Line United Methodist Cemetery in Delmar, DE.
