ATWOOD R TIMMONS, SR's Obituary
Mr. Atwood R. Timmons, longtime resident of Millsboro, DE passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015, after a short illness. He was 91 years old. He was born in Millsboro, DE on January 6, 1924 to the late Fred V. and Elizabeth Hickman Timmons. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1949 and a grandson, Zachary Carey. He worked for Hitchens Auto Supply for 42 years and 7 months as Counter Manager. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 3-19-1943 to 10-26-1945. He was a flight member of the 10th Air Force in the China Burma India Theater. He was a flight member on a B24 and flew 36 missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Unit Citation and Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of VFW post 7422. He served in the Honor Guard for several years with extreme dedication, passionately forcing himself to ""show up"" even when in ill health himself, because he always thought of those who didn't get back home from the war, and felt obligated to something to honor them. He was chairman of the Voice of Democracy for many years. He was Post Commander from 1995 - 1997 and again from 2002 - 2012. He raced go-karts from 1961- 1994. He was inducted in the Delaware Chapter, WKA Hall of Fame in 1992. His wartime exploits were featured in the film ""Vanishing Heroes"" and he was featured in many publications in recent years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Aileen Donovan Timmons of Millsboro, DE; one daughter, Vickie Carey and her husband, Fred, one son, Atwood R. Timmons, II, a granddaughter, Erin and three great grandchildren, Noah, Isabella and Ayden. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call after 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in the Millsboro Cemetery. Pastors Tim Wilson and Paul Sherwood will officiate.
