Betty S. Johnson's Obituary
Betty Sue Johnson was born on March 25, 1940, in Wardtown, VA, to the late Thomas and Novilla Wescott. On Monday, February 21, 2022, at Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, MD, God called her home to be with Him.
"Sue," as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was educated in the North Hampton County Virginia school system and graduated from North Hampton High School. She met and married Kester Taylor, and to this union three children were born. She later met and married Charles Johnson and adopted two additional children.
She was employed in the poultry industry for over 30 years. It was during this time that she met and led her lifelong friend, Cora Jones, to the Lord-a story both she and Cora fondly recounted over the years. She came out of retirement to work as a foster grandparent in the Delaware Foster Grandparents Program at Splash Day School. Sue was employed by the Foster Grandparent Program until her demise.
In 1961, she moved to Kent Island, MD, for a short period of time before moving to Delaware to be closer to family. In 1963, Sue joined Holy Trinity, Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of N.L. and Irma Goldsberry. There she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and became a devoted and diligent worker in the church. She served the ministry in numerous roles over the years, including as a choir member, church secretary, Bible Band teacher, Young Women's Christian Council president, Missionary Board member, and Church Mother. As a missionary, it became very apparent that the title "preacher" was more appropriate. One only had to hear her expound the word of God just once to understand why she earned that title. She remained a faithful worker during the administrations of the late Bishop L.T. Blackshear and of Elder Dexter Taylor.
Sue's favorite pastime was cooking; especially baking her delicious and highly sought-after cakes. She also loved to shop during annual trips to Lancaster with her daughter, Iris, Ronnie Peacock, and her ever-faithful sidekick, her sister Phyllis. She especially loved their yearly family trips to Sight and Sound Theater.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Iris (Tracy) Payne of Lincoln, DE, Dexter (Tracy) Taylor of Laurel, DE, Ivan Taylor of Delmar, DE, Andrea Johnson of Cambridge, MD, and April Johnson of Milwaukee, WI. Ten grandchildren (Mychal, Briauna, Kaitlyn, Justin, Kelsea, Destiny, Takyra, Patrice, Garrison, and Shannon). Three great-grandchildren, two Godchildren, Linda Collins and Alphonso Snead, Jr. Two sisters, Corine Collins and Phyllis (Arthur) Deshields, and one brother, John (Stephany) Wescott, all of Delmar, DE. Three honorary daughters, Irma Horsey, Patricia Norfleet, and Darlene Bowers, a host of nieces, nephews, and her New Holy Trinity church family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at New Holy Trinity Church, 29507 1st Street, Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call from 9 AM - 11 AM for viewing and visitation. Interment will follow at Zoar Golden Acres, Bishopville, MD 21813.
