Cecil Shockley Long's Obituary
Cecil Shockley Long peacefully passed away at the age of 98 in the comfort of her daughter's residence in Millsboro, DE, on July 29, 2024. Born in Ocean View, DE, on May 7, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Daniel N. Shockley and Flossie Shockley (Long), and was predeceased by her sister, Minnie Steele.
Mrs. Long graduated from Lord Baltimore High School in 1944 before embarking on a career marked by compassionate service. She began her professional life as a vaccination specialist for Townsend Poultry, later working at Houston White Basket Co. and eventually found her calling as a Nurse Aid at Stockley Center. After 22 years of dedicated service, she retired, leaving behind a legacy of care and commitment.
In 1945, Mrs. Long married the love of her life, Charles Long, and together they raised a vibrant family. She is survived by her four children: Margaret Long McCabe of Selbyville, DE, Debbie Brewington of Millsboro, DE, Charles Long Jr. (Deborah) of Georgetown, DE, and Kim Schoenle of Federalsburg, MD; her sister, Elizabeth Evans of Bear, DE; her ten grandchildren: Elbert Collins (Melody), Douglas Collins (Heather), Phillip Collins, Eric Collins, Frank Moore, Bruce Moore, Hobie Brewington (Lori), Trent Collins (Kelly), Jamie Hull (Rob), and Melissa Schoenle; twenty-three great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mrs. Long was a fixture of Carey's United Methodist Church, deeply involved in the church's activities. Her faith was reflected in her years of volunteering at the Christian Storehouse in Millsboro, DE and at ACTS in Ocean View, DE, where she touched many lives. Mrs. Long was not only known for being the glue that kept everyone together, but also for her famous chicken and dumplings, and her pepper relish.
A funeral service for Mrs. Long will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Watson Funeral Home & Crematorium, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, DE, 19966, where friends may call beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will immediately follow at Millsboro Cemetery.
