David (Dave) O'Neal Newman, Sr.'s Obituary
David (Dave) O’neal Newman Sr, 81, of Bridgeville, DE, went on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Dave was born July 17, 1943 in Woodbury, Tennessee, the son of James O’neal (J.O.) Newman and Nola Mae (Stacy) Newman. Dave’s mother passed away in 1946 and Dave’s paternal grandparents raised him in Greenville, Kentucky, until he was six years old. Dave then moved to Louisville where he was raised by his father and step-mother, Hazel Newman.
Dave graduated from high school in 1961 and immediately joined the United States Navy. He served until he was medically discharged in 1962.
Dave married Lois Gibson on November 3, 1962, in Charleston, South Carolina. Dave and Lois went on to have three children.
Dave was no stranger to the trucking industry. He served in almost every role including a driver, a dispatcher, and as a general manager. One of his well-known achievements was being recognized with the Million Mile Award. Dave was also a Life Member at the Seaford, Delaware, Elks Lodge and a past Exalted Ruler.
Much of his life was devoted to serving the Lord. Dave spent his most recent years as a member of Christ Evangelistic Church in Laurel, DE. He also served in the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program with his wife, Lois, and brother-in-law, Bobby Gibson. Together, they brought the gospel of Jesus Christ to others and served communities across the East coast.
Remaining to cherish Dave’s memory are his spouse of 62 years, Lois Gibson Newman; son, Steven Newman (Christine), son David Newman Jr; daughter, Ann Murray (Frank); and brother, Hal Newman (Tami). He also has 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966, on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 12:00 PM with a viewing from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM prior to the start of the service. Interment will be held at 1:00 PM at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in Georgetown, DE.
