Obituary of Elton Paul Godfrey
Elton Paul Godfrey of Millsboro, DE passed away on February 24, 2022, at his home under the care of his devoted wife, Virginia, and caregivers with Delaware Hospice, along with compassionate end-of-life aides, Alice and Mary. He was 97 years old.
Elton was born on May 2, 1924, to the late Emory Paul and Della Derrickson Godfrey. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Millsboro where he spent time as Senior Warden of the Vestry, and as Treasurer. He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served in the Pacific as a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army. He worked as a supervisor at the Seaford DuPont Nylon Plant, retiring after many years of service. He also was a past board member for the Indian River School Board, a past President of the Millsboro Lion's Club, a past Commander of the Indian River Power Squadron, and a long-time member of Indian River Yacht Club and Sussex Pines Country Club. He enjoyed wintering with other Millsboro "snowbirds" in Hobe Sound, FL for many years, where he was active with the Hall-Bryan VFW Post. His interests included golf, boating, NASCAR, watching baseball, and gardening, with a love for growing rose bushes. He was a friendly and happy man who loved to help people and was liked by most everybody.
Elton is survived by his wife of 75 years, Virginia Mae Truitt Godfrey; his brother, Donald B. Godfrey of Newark; nieces and nephews; his "special daughter", Diane Potter and her husband David of Millsboro; grandson, Michael Potter and his wife Jessica of Millsboro; grandson Brian Cordrey and his wife Crystal of Millsboro; and two great-grandchildren, Evan and Gavin Cordrey of Millsboro. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
Elton was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Paul Godfrey; and his sister, June Parlier.
All services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriot Way, Milford, DE 19963; or to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 422, Millsboro, DE 19966.
