Gerald D. Shock's Obituary
Gerald D. Shock, a dedicated patriot and esteemed civil engineer, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, in Millsboro, Delaware, at the age of 76. He was born on October 31, 1947, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Beryl Shock and Garnett White Shock.
Gerald's life was marked by profound service to his country and community. After graduating from Spencer High School in Spencer, West Virginia, he bravely answered the call to duty, proudly serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His commitment to duty and excellence led him to specialize as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist in the United States Navy, where he served as a civil engineer for over 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his beloved wife, Shirley Shock.
As a member of American Legion Post 28, he found fellowship and community among his fellow veterans, sharing stories and memories of their shared experiences. He also enjoyed fishing and crabbing, finding peace by the water's edge. Jerry enjoyed listening to country and bluegrass, and among his favorite hymns were the timeless classics “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”.
Jerry is survived by his stepsons, Stanley Strauss of Houston, TX, and Selvin Strauss (Carol) of Upper Marlboro, MD, and five grandchildren, Jason, Brittany, Ryan, Rachael, and Cara and his significant other, Barbara Snyder.
Gerald D. Shock will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His courage, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his country and loved ones leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those he leaves behind. Though he may be gone, his legacy of service and love will endure for generations to come.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Gerald's life will be held at Indian Mission U.M.C., 22701 Indian Mission Rd, Harbeson, DE 19951, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11am with a viewing from 10-11am prior to the start of the service. A public viewing will also be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 6-8pm at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, DE. Interment will be held at Indian Mission U.M.C. Cemetery immediately following the service.
