Herbert Handy Sr.'s Obituary
Saturday, April 22, 2023, surrounded by the love and support of his wife and family, Herbert Handy, Sr. peacefully transitioned from his earthly home to be with the Lord at the blessed age of 81.
Born November 14, 1941, and raised in Selbyville, Delaware, he was the fourth son of eleven children born to the union of the late Joshua and Ella Mae Powell, Handy.
Growing up as a young man, Herbert received his education at Jason High School.
September 14, 1963, at the ripe age of twenty-two, he was united in Holy matrimony to his lovely wife Shirley whom he loved dearly. Herbert spent many years working in the Poultry Division as a chicken catcher. Herbert was later employed by the Town of Ocean City as a Janitor. He held this position for eleven years until his health began to decline.
Aside from working, Herbert was a faithful member of Zoar United Methodist Church in Selbyville where he served in several capacities such as the United Methodist Men’s Choir, Board of Trustees, and the Harvest Home Auctioneer.
Some of Herbert’s favorite past time treasures were working around the yard doing some landscaping and gathering stones. Let’s not forget that he had a passion for telling jokes, and making people laugh. He was the life of every party! He even had a special eye for decorating when it came to his yard. He had no problem using his children and grandchildren’s belongings to do it.
Herbert loved football to the point that he believed he was one when he was younger…the funny thing is no-one never heard tell of it. “Yeah Man” was one of his favorite responses. Herbert loved spending time with his family and those special moments will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Handy, and three granddaughters.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 59 years, Shirley of Selbyville, DE; Three sons and their companions, Herbert Handy, Jr., of Selbyville, DE; Keith Handy (Vicki) of Berlin, MD; James Handy (Joanne) of Seaford, DE.
