James Edward Powell's Obituary
James Edward Powell, age 83, of Millsboro, DE, passed away peacefully at home on December 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 3, 1941, in Frankford, DE, he was the beloved son of the late John W. and Ethel F. (Hitchens) Powell.
James was a hardworking man who wore many hats during his lifetime. He began his career as a milkman for Cloverland and later worked as a truck driver. Outside of work, he found great joy in tending to his garden, landscaping, and keeping his lawn immaculate. James cherished trips to Ocean City, MD, and loved spending quality time with his grandchildren and his granddoggies.
James is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel; his daughter, Sandra Davis; his great-granddaughter, Lanie Powell; and his sisters, Betty Swift and Darlene Moore.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Shirley Mae (Elliott) Powell; his children, Paula Wells (Gary), Betty Jo Andrie (Allen), and Vernon Powell (Maureen); his step-daughter, Pamela Mitchell; his sister, Brenda Joseph; and his brother, Russell Powell. James also leaves behind a legacy of love with his grandchildren: Angela Witschi (David), Steven Davis (Christine), Richard Wells, Tiffany Wells (Joey), Shannon Davis (Steve), Clarence V. McCabe, III, Eben McCabe, Macie Cameron (Andrew), Madison Powell, and Tara Somers. His great-grandchildren, Bella, Alexis, Shia, Khyle, Kairi, Anna, Kale, Remi, Halston, Harley, and Harlow, as well as soon-to-arrive great-grandsons Asher and Enzo, will carry on his memory.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium. A viewing will take place prior to the service, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Carey’s Cemetery in Millsboro, DE.
James’s family and friends will forever remember his kind heart, hardworking nature, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
