Joan Collins Townsend's Obituary
Joan Collins Townsend April 4, 1938 – July 13, 2025
Joan Collins Townsend, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and community servant, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born on April 4, 1938, to Harold Collins and Omeda (Taylor) Collins, Joan was a lifelong resident of Sussex County, Delaware. She graduated from Lord Baltimore High School in 1956 and went on to attend Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington. Throughout her life, Joan embraced a strong work ethic and an equally strong sense of community.
Joan’s diverse talents were reflected in the many roles she held during her lifetime—from raising chickens and substitute teaching at her alma mater, to working at the Delmarva News. However, her most notable and longstanding contribution came through her 30-plus-year career with the United States Postal Service, faithfully serving the Ocean View and Bethany Beach communities.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed completing word find puzzles and making trips to the slot machines, finding joy in both quiet reflection and spirited fun.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, E. Wayne Collins. She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald Townsend; her brother, Gene Collins; her two sons, Mack Townsend (Sandra) and Marvin Townsend (Kelly); her grandchildren, Austin Townsend, Jamie Townsend, and Kara Funkhouser; her three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, all of whom brought great joy to her life.
A graveside service will be held in Joan’s honor on Tuesday, July 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. George’s Church in her memory.
