Melvin Truitt's Obituary
Melvin Truitt, fondly known around Millsboro as “Rawhide,” passed away on July 16, 2025, in Lewes, DE, at the age of 87. Born on January 25, 1938, in Millsboro, DE, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Hudson) Truitt.
Melvin worked for many years at Mountaire Farms in Millsboro, where he was well respected by his coworkers and friends. Known for his easygoing personality and the nickname that followed him throughout town, “Rawhide” was a familiar and friendly face to many in the community he loved.
He was a member of Carey’s Church and enjoyed church activities, especially Carey’s Camp. Melvin enjoyed fixing things, cutting grass on his riding lawn mower, improving and expanding his model train collection, all things Willie Nelson, stock cars, and Sunday morning pancakes with the Palmers.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Jean Hudson and Elizabeth Rayner; and brothers William Truitt and Arthur Truitt. He is survived by his brother Virgil Truitt (Charlene), special niece Bonnie T. VanBuskirk; and many other nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by special friends Jim and Cindy Palmer and John and Jan Fisher.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966. A visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Interment will follow at Millsboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carey’s Church, c/o Josephine Dorey, 22750 Carey’s Camp Road, Millsboro, DE 19966.
