Merrill James Parker's Obituary
Merrill James “Jimmy” Parker
“Pop”
Millsboro, Delaware
Merrill James Parker, lovingly known as “Jimmy” or “Pop,” went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 2, 2025.
Born and raised in Millsboro, Delaware, Jimmy lived his entire life in the community he loved. He was married for 63 years to the love of his life, Betty Lou Parker, his devoted partner and best friend. Together, they built a beautiful life and home on “Raccoon’s Point,” where family and faith were always at the center.
Jimmy proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard, where he trained in El Paso, Texas. He often spoke fondly of his time in the service, reflecting on it as one of the most memorable periods of his life. A true patriot, he deeply loved his country and was proud of his beliefs.
He and Betty were blessed with two sons: James (Jimmy) Parker and his wife Mary Beth, and Dean Parker and his wife Kathy. He was a proud grandfather to granddaughters, Jaime Parker and Kinsley Hazel (married to Brandon), who were the light of his life. He also adored his great-granddaughters, Kendall and Kentley, who brought him immeasurable joy. Jimmy cherished every moment with them—watching Kendall grow up, attending her sports, and spending time with baby Kentley, whose visits always brightened his days. They were truly the reason behind his strength, his fight, and his ever-present smile.
He was also blessed with granddaughter, Jessica Horner, and a great-granddaughter, Alexa Cannon. Jimmy is also survived by his two loving sisters, his twin, Minnie Parker, and Linda Dykes, who shared a lifetime of cherished memories and a deep family bond with him.
Jimmy worked for many years at DuPont, later joining the construction industry working for himself, alongside his brother Jack, and eventually working for his son Jimmy. A hardworking man by nature, he was also an avid farmer, raising poultry and tending to his garden with pride. He loved fishing, hunting, and sharing laughter-filled stories—tales that might have seemed far-fetched to some, but those who knew him best could attest that the wildest things just had a way of happening to him. His hearty laugh and colorful storytelling will be remembered by all who had the joy of knowing him.
Jimmy attended the Gumboro Wesleyan Church, and he often spoke of his excitement for his final home in Heaven.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather, and brother, and now rejoices in their reunion.
Jimmy will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and all who were blessed to share in his life and laughter. His faith, love, and kindness will continue to live on through those he cherished most.
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” — John 14:2–3 (KJV)
A Fellowship in Jimmy’s honor will be held on Saturday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gumboro Fire Hall.
The family understands this is the first day of Delaware’s deer hunting season, and in true Jimmy/Pop fashion, he would want you to come exactly as you are.
