I have known Rev Backus & children since he came to Christ United U. M. Church in Dagsboro which use to be across from Clayton Theater. He & Marilee have been friends of my family up to this present day. I have loved this man since I first meant him to his death-he was a wonderful minister, had the most beautiful blue eyes & that soft Virginia twang sling with that beautiful smile. He & I have always joked with each no matter were we where. In these latter years I didn't get to see him as often but we did exchange Christmas cards. Our last conversation was when he was at Hickory Hill United Methodist Church & his spoke-Rev Backus was highly respected & loved. He is now with Our Father & his dear friend & wife, Marilee-God be with each of you 4 children & your families-you had wonderful parents & grandparents-as the members use to say "here comes the "preachers kids" & all wondered if the kids would drive the minister & his wife crazy-ha ha-well, we know they didn't-they all followed in his footstepsI am proud & happy I had the privilege to know this living & wonderful family-prayers yo all of you

To Howard and Sue. Dick Walker sent info about your Dad. I welcome hearing from you. Email [email protected]. Philip from Charleston years ago.

Art was a wonderful and faithful servant and a true encourager to me early in my ministry. I thank God for his life and faith and pray that the Lord's comfort and peace would be near to all of you.

My wife and I had the pleasure of attending Spruce Street UMC for three years while I was in law school. When we told him we were leaving and moving to Montgomery, he told us Montgomery was getting a new minister the same week we were arriving there and we should be there that Sunday. We were and have been attending there since June 1974. He was a true inspiration and his sermons resonate still today. I also remember his children's talks at the second service. One Sunday he produced a sheet of paper with a black dot in the center and ask the kids what they saw. Obviously surprised by one child's response (a white sheet of paper with a dot--most only saw the dot, which was his point) he asked further about that answer and the child said "I listened to your kid's service on the radio during the first service". He was truly a great servant of the Lord and I am sure he will be missed by all of his family and friends.Carl and Jo Harris

I am sorry for your loss of Arthur. He was a great friend, pastor, and leader for the United Methodist Church. He was genuine, caring, and mission minded. My thoughts and prayers are with members of the family, Zoar and Carey's churches, and his many friends. May's God give you peace, even as you thank him for the gift of this great person.
