Obituary for Robert Dudley LeGates
Robert Dudley LeGates, age 85, of Millsboro, DE, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on September 26, 2025. He was born in Lewes, DE, on February 9, 1940, son of the late John Sylvester and Dorothy Elizabeth (Jefferson) LeGates.
After graduating from high school, Robert began his career with E.I. DuPont, where he worked diligently for 36 years. Outside of work, he enjoyed traveling, dirt track racing, and coin collecting. Above all, Robert most cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who were truly his everything.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Stella L. LeGates; his children: Christopher R. LeGates (Melissa) of Milford, DE, Stacy L. Pfleger (John) of Georgetown, DE, and Kelly L. Figurski (Scott) of Millsboro, DE; his grandchildren: Kasandra LeGates of Wheeling, WV, Joshua LeGates of Milford, DE, Stephanie LeGates of Wheeling, WV, Britaney Guinta (Noah) of Seaford, DE, John Pflegler IV (Morgan) of Kenosha, WI, and Sara Figurski of Millsboro, DE; along with seven great-grandchildren, a sister Janet Merrifield from Liberty, SC, and nieces and nephews who brought him much joy. The family would also like to thank Raquel McNeil from Granny Nannies and the nurses at VITAS Healthcare for all that they did for Robert.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, DE 19966. A visitation will take place one hour prior, from 10:00–11:00 AM. Interment will follow immediately at Millsboro Cemetery.
Robert will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend. His legacy of love, family, and treasured memories will live on in all who knew him.
