ROBERT V LONG's Obituary
Robert "Bob" Long of Gumboro, DE passed away on October 31, 2015 following a short illness. He was 76.
Bob was born in Bishop, MD to Virgie (Wilkerson) and Harry Long. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Janet Redzig.
Bob spent his adult life raising a family in the small rural community of Gumboro. Shortly after moving there, he joined the Gumboro Volunteer Fire Dept. and spent many fulfilling years in service to his community. He participated in many activities as a volunteer, but his passion was working on the ambulance. In addition to providing direct care and comfort to those in need, his favorite accomplishment was being part of a group that designed and equipped a new ambulance in the later years of his active service. His community service did not end there. When the Girl Scouts of America were faced with a leader shortage; he took the necessary training and paired with a lady as her assistant leader of a brownie troop. He later worked with a local Eagle Scout Troop. After retirement, Bob became an avid flier at the young age of 66. He spent many enjoyable hours at various local airports making new friends. He was a gentle man who never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Decker Long; three daughters, Kathy Long, Melody Morgan (Archie) and Mary Caudill (companion Tim Delp); five grandchildren, James, Chris (Brandi) Hastings, JD (companion Shannon) and Josh (Christy) Caudill and Quintin Morgan; five great grandchildren, Desiree, Jordan, Alyssa and Zachary Hastings and Ethan Caudill. He is also survived by a sister Jean Ellen (Marvin) Hitchens along with many extended family and friends.
A funeral and celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966, with a viewing beginning at 12:00 PM. Burial will be private.
