SHIRLEY ANN STURGIS HANDY's Obituary
Shirley Ann Sturgis, Handy 75 of Frankford, daughter of the late Harley C. and Essie A. Hurst Sturgis departed this life to be with the Lord on Friday, September 12, 2014. Born on July 4, 1939 she was the ninth child of twelve siblings. She received her education in the Sussex county school system attending Hollyville and Jason High School. Shirley accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at the early age of thirteen at the Union Wesley United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Delaware. Later in life she obtained membership at the Zoar United Methodist Church in Selbyville, Delaware where she sang with the Roy Moore Gospel Singers. She later joined the First Millsboro Seventh Day Adventist Church in Millsboro, Delaware where she currently attended faithfully until her passing. She was employed by the Stockley Center in Millsboro, Delaware for more than 18 years, retiring early due to health related issues. In addition to her permanent employment she was an aspiring entrepreneur herself, had many other occupations in her lifetime working in various businesses such as restaurants, private family caregiving, consultant for Beeline Fashions, Pre-paid Legal, and Princess House products. On July 29th, 1967 she was united in holy matrimony to David Handy, whom she considered the man of her dreams. Together they explored the world with several vacations. Together they celebrated their Silver Anniversary surrounded by the love and fellowship of family and friends. Though faced with many obstacles and difficulties that life may bring, Shirley lived her life to the fullest enjoying every minute of it. God preformed many miracles in her life, which made her a living testimony that God can and He will deliver! She loved and supported her family wholeheartedly and was no stranger to anyone. Her favorite pastimes were being creative in making handcrafts, flower arranging, hats, and hosting family gatherings. She was also a member of the Purple Heart and Red Hat Association. She was preceded in death by sibblings, Theodore, Samuel, Sallie, Victor, Clara, Gertrude, Mary and Martha. She leaves to cherish fond memories her husband of 47 years David L. Handy of Frankford, DE; a daughter Francine R. Chandler of Millsboro and her two children whom she raised as her own. Five extended children, David L. (Carmeca) Chandler,I. of Selbyville, DE; Charlene D. Chandler, of Milford, DE; Dortez (Tanisha) McCray of Selbyville, Davida McCray of Millsboro, and Desheena McCray of Georgetown, DE. Thirteen grandchildren,Shanice, Curtis, Yasmeen, Myron, Traequan, David,II., David,III., Onshea, Desia, Zave'ion, De'Vaughn, Taliyah, Toccara, and Shane. One granddaughter, Jennifer and one great-granddaughter Cianni. Three sisters: Lois M. (George) Wolford, of Frankford, DE; Carolyn L. (Gary) Harmon, and Marian L. Burton all of Millsboro, DE. Numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 12 Noon on Sunday, September, 21, 2014, at the Millsboro Seventh Day Adventist Church, 30007 Cordrey Road, Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call after 10:00 AM.
