Stephen Robert Mumford's Obituary
Stephen Robert Mumford February 1, 1948 – June 10, 2025
Stephen Robert Mumford of Millsboro, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on June 10, 2025, at the age of 77, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born on February 1, 1948, Steve was the son of the late Lloyd and Louise Leonard Mumford, also of Millsboro. A 1967 graduate of Millsboro High School, Steve was honored to be selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates to attend their prospect camp. Despite the opportunity, he chose to remain in his hometown and marry his high school sweetheart, Karen Workman.
Steve served his country proudly in the United States Army, spending 1968–1969 in Vietnam. He carried his pride in that service throughout his life. Upon returning home, he began a long career as a Correctional Officer with the State of Delaware, retiring after 32 years of dedicated service.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Karen Workman Mumford; daughters Katrina (Allen) Mears and Nicki Mumford (Andrew) Steen; grandsons Lance and Trey (Samantha) Mears, Reif and Kai Steen; granddaughter Maggie Drew Steen; and their cherished and feisty miniature pinscher, Ruby. He is also survived by a large extended family who will remember his teasing humor and deep love for his family.
Steve found great joy in watching his grandchildren play sports, spending countless hours working on and inspecting his yard, cruising the neighborhood in his golf cart, and being a “Mumford,” which included copious amounts of mischief and teasing —a trait all the Mumfords carry on.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Louise Mumford; in-laws, Dale and Verna Workman, his brother, Clifton Mumford; brother-in-law Gene Brewington, sister-in-law Joyce Harrell and nephews James Todd Mumford and John David LaPrad.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hickory Hill Methodist Church where he was a lifelong member.
