Vernon J Hitchens' Obituary
Mr. Vernon J. Hitchens of Millsboro, DE passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019. He was 81 years old.
Mr. Hitchens was born on March 5, 1938 to the late James H. and Jerdie E. Oliphant Hitchens. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by a brother Gerald Hitchens and brother-in-law James Robinson.
Vernon retired from the Local 2012 Carpenters Union where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of the Delaware National Guard for 4 years and the U.S. National Reserves for 2 years, Burnt Swamp Sportmans Club, Free Mason #37 in Dagsboro and the Scottish Rite Freemasonry #32 in Wilmington. He was also a member of the Delaware Mobile Surf Fishermen Inc. for 40 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Grace Ann Mitchell Hitchens of Millsboro, DE; five children, Richard Hitchens (Donie) of Gumboro, DE; Michael Hitchens (Pamela) of Millsboro, DE; Mark Hitchens (Peggy) of Millsboro, DE; Steven Hitchens of Dagsboro, DE and Beverly Truitt of Frankford, DE. He also is survived by six siblings, Thelma Banks (Sherman) of Gumboro, DE; Barbara Scott (Alton) of Georgetown, DE; Janice Robinson of Frankford, DE; Deborah Cordrey (Denny) of Millsboro, DE; Bonnie Abbott of Millsboro, DE; and Paul Hitchens (Norma Lee) of Ocean view, DE, brothers in law, Don Mitchell (Beverly), Van Mitchell (Neva Lee), Chad Mitchell (Tami) and a sisters in law, Joan Tribbitt and Linda Hitchens. He also leaves to cherish his memories, seven grandchildren, Hillary Graves, Beth Evans, Heidi Hitchens, Heather Hall, Hannah Hitchens, Travis Truitt, and Blakelyn Truitt as well as 5 great grandchildren, Allie, Lilly, Caroline, Charlotte and Abel. Vernon is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call from 11 AM - 12 Noon for viewing and visitation. Burial will follow in Carey's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Vernon's memory to either Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 or Carey's Cemetery, c/o Don Ward, 25051 Ward Farm Lane, Millsboro, DE 19966.
