Voyd Wellington Harmon, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, in Seaford, Delaware, surrounded by his family. Born on June 3, 1934, in Millsboro, Delaware.
Voyd was the beloved son of the late David Harmon and Elizabeth Ellen (Burton) Smith. He was raised by his grandparents, Harvey and Emma Burton, they resided on Oakley Farm and Voyd tended the farm while attending Johnson and Warwick Schools. His grandparents and mother instilled in him a deep sense of family and faith.
Voyd worked for many years as a Lumberjack for Mr. Eugene Bookhammer and Mr. Gib Johnson. He also worked at Townsends Poultry, where he was a valued employee known for his dedication and strong work ethic. He retired from Townsends in 1997.
On April 22, 1961, he married the love of his life, Bettie Jean (Powell) Harmon, and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories. Voyd was a patient, protective, supportive, loving father that enjoyed spending time with his girls and he was very proud of his family.
Voyd found great joy in simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors with nature, whether he was camping, tending to his garden, doing yard work, hunting, clamming, crabbing and seine fishing on the Indian River, or watching for eagles, he loved it all. He had lots of animals such as dogs, pigs, guineafowls, and a special horse named Blackfoot. His hobbies included making peace pipes, holly wreaths and collecting arrowheads.
Voyd took delight in anonymously leaving baskets of produce from his garden on porches and doorsteps throughout the community for friends and neighbors to enjoy.
Voyd was also a fan of yard sales, always on the hunt for a good bargain. He cherished the moments spent sharing stories with friends, whether in his yard in the grove or over coffee at McDonald’s.
A man of deep faith, Voyd was very active at Harmony United Methodist Church, where he served his community as the Sexton for Harmony Cemetery, ensuring it remained a place of peace and remembrance. He was the oldest member and a dedicated Trustee for many years. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed helping with the church dinners.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bettie Harmon, and his loving daughters: Theresa Harmon, Denise Howard, and Jennifer Whaley (Howard). He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Clifton Harmon, Briana Howard, Elijah Whaley, Brittney Howard, and Mariah Whaley; and three great-grandchildren: Bazil Harmon, James Harmon, and Katrease Harmon. Voyd will be deeply missed by his brothers-in-law, William Powell (Marjorie), Jesse Powell (Carolyn), and Alton Powell; his sisters-in-law, Willia Mae Parker Taylor, devoted sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Hopkins, and Ruby Powell; as well as his cousin, Nora Steele.
He will also be remembered fondly by special friends Conrad Harmon, Danny Wright, Dallas Wright, Bruce Taylor, and Vina Bailey, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his parents Voyd was preceded in death by his two brothers, Sylvester Harmon and Cornelius Harmon and three sisters, Grace Barnhill, Charlotte Burton, and Vanessa Smith.
● A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Harmony United Methodist Church, with a viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service.
The church address is: Harmony United Methodist Church 27270 John J. Williams Highway Millsboro, Delaware 19966. Interment will immediately follow at Harmony Cemetery.
Voyd’s kindness, generosity, love for his family, and unwavering faith will be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and a life well-lived.
