Douglas Lee Reed Sr.'s Obituary
Douglas Lee Reed (“Doug”), a devoted family man, public servant, community leader, athlete, and beloved friend unexpectedly departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 21, 2026. His transition leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born in Lewes, DE on June 4, 1970, to Anna Reed, Doug was lovingly raised by his mother and stepfather, Franklin Palmer from the time Doug was three years old. His character and work ethic were shaped at an early age. A standout student-athlete who never wanted to miss a day of school, he graduated from Sussex Central High School and distinguished himself as a three-sport star athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track. Doug’s outstanding high school football talent earned him a scholarship to Delaware State University. He continued to excel as a NCAA Division 1 Running Back (1989-1992), where he set and broke numerous university records as a running back. In 1993, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice from Delaware State University.
Doug’s college years set the stage for a lifetime of discipline, teamwork, and service. Those values eventually carried him into a distinguished career in law enforcement in 1993. He served for more than two decades as a Delaware State Trooper. He was deeply committed to protecting others, mentoring youth, and strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they served - always leading with compassion and integrity.
The birth of his son, Douglas Jr. (“Lil Dougie”), born in 1999, was the defining joy of his life and his greatest source of pride. He poured himself into fatherhood, guiding his son with love, wisdom, and the kind of “tough love” meant to build character and resilience. He believed that preparing his son for the world was one of the most important responsibilities he would ever have – and he embraces that role with dedicated purpose.
After retiring from the state service in 2014, Doug continued his mission of protection and service in educational and institutional security, working in school environments and at the highest levels of court security, including assignments supporting the U.S. Supreme Court. Doug approached every role with professionalism, calm leadership, and a genuine concern for people. During this time he also became a proud member of the Road Wolves MC in Georgetown, DE, where he was instrumental in planning the Road Wolves Community Day and Health Fair.
In 2024 he moved to Raleigh, NC and started planting roots as an involved community member, volunteering his time with the Lions Club of Cary, NC where he earned his Lions KidSight USA Certification and helped organize a Thanksgiving Meal box giveaway serving twenty-five families in Wake County. Doug had a gift for being present, consistent, and selfless.
In the final chapter of his life, Doug took a bold step toward entrepreneurship, Founding D&D22 Courier Services, LLC on March 8, 2025, a professional courier company built on principles he lived by-accountability, precision, reliability, and ethical service.
Doug Reed was well liked by everyone who crossed his path. Above all, he will be remembered for a heart-a heart for service, for community, for family, and for doing what was right. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, strength, and love that will live on through the many lives he touched, including his son, Douglas L. Reed, Jr., Raleigh, NC; his parents Anna Reed and Franklin Palmer, Millsboro, DE; his beloved companion and business partner, Davetta Dunlap, Morrisville, NC; biological father and stepmother, Douglas & Diane Cannon, Milton, DE; Grandmother, Lizzie Cannon, Bridgeville, DE; three sisters: Angela Hood, Ellendale, DE, Tameka McAllister (Eugene), Laurel, DE, Danielle Jones, Milford, DE; four brothers: Andre Hood, Georgetown, DE, Donte’ Smith, Georgetown, DE, Dedrick Jones, Bridgeville, DE, Turray Jones, Laurel, DE; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Sussex Central High School, 26044 Patriots Way, Georgetown, DE 19947. A viewing will begin at 11:00 AM prior to the start of the service. Interment will immediately follow at St. John 2nd Baptist Church Cemetery, 26602 Mt. Joy Rd, Millsboro, DE 19966.
