Elizabeth Conroy Hurdle's Obituary
Elizabeth Conroy Hurdle, 91, of Harbeson, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 15, 1934, in Washington, D.C., Elizabeth was the cherished daughter of the late William Joseph Conroy and Margaret Elizabeth (Boone) Conroy. She attended Lewis High School, graduating with the class of 1952. She continued her education at The University of Delaware Newark, June 3, 1956, where she earned her Master of Arts degree at the University of South Florida on August 15, 1969, a testament to her lifelong commitment to learning and service.
Elizabeth devoted her life to education , a calling that was truly her passion. She taught in Maryland, Florida, and Delaware, where she made a lasting impact on countless students. With remarkable patience, compassion, and dedication, she worked closely with disabled students and those struggling with mental health challenges, always advocation for their dignity, growth, and success. Her classroom was a place of encouragement, understanding, and unwavering support.
She married the love of her life, William Thomas Hurdle, III, in June of 1956. Together they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and shared values, creating a home filled with warmth and laughter.
Outside of her professional life, Elizabeth found joy in the simple and beautiful things. She had a deep love for flowers and spent many peaceful hours tending to her gardens, which flourished under her attentive care. She also enjoyed singing and has a special fondness for collecting elephant statues and figurines, each piece treasured and thoughtfully displayed. Proudly engaged in her community, Elizabeth was the oldest member of Eastern Sussex Democrat, reflecting her lifelong commitment to civic involvement and public service.
Elizabeth will be remembered for her kind heart, steadfast faith in others, and the profound difference she made in the lives of her students, family, and friends. Her legacy of compassion, education, and love will continue to live on in all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at Watson Funeral Home & Crematorium, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, DE 19966, on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11:00AM, with a viewing from 10:00AM to 11:00AM prior to the start of the service. Interment will follow immediately at St. George’s Episcopal Church Cemetery.
