Francis Walter McClatchy, Jr.'s Obituary
Francis "Frank" Walter McClatchy, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 17th, 2025. He was surrounded by his family. Frank was born on February 22, 1943, in Darby, PA, son of the late Francis and Mary (Feeser) McClatchy. Frank was born into a large Catholic family. He was one of six children, all of whom were sisters. Two of his sisters have passed: Mary Hewes and Joan Bishop. His surviving sisters are Barbara Clay, Anne Coacher, and Kaye Ralston.
Frank was the beloved husband of Katherine Jean (Ellis) McClatchy; they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this past September 5th. They were married in Rutledge, PA, and welcomed three children: Kara McClatchy, Julia Terry, and Francis McClatchy. Frank was blessed with eight grandchildren: David, Chelsea, Roan, Ania, Allison, Kayla, Mitchell, and Matteo.
Frank was the owner-operator of Frank McClatchy Plumbing and Heating for over 24 years. He was also a Master Carpenter and really enjoyed working with his hands. Frank had a strong sense of adventure. This led him to be a tractor-trailer driver, sail to St. Thomas with a small crew, break colts in Devon, PA, and join the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Turkey and Japan, all before marrying Kay.
Once Frank and Kay moved and settled into their home in Exton, PA, he joined Optimist International Club of Chester County, PA, even becoming President. He enjoyed the club and giving back to the community.
Frank went to church every Sunday with his family and supported his children in all ways possible, including driving all over the country to cross-country and track meets.
Frank coached the Varsity Softball team for Sts. Philip and James School for over 20 years. He led these teams to numerous championships by teaching the girls the art of "the steal." He had a passion for softball and baseball.
Frank was overjoyed to have his grandchildren around the house, even when they left their toys out. He built them a playhouse and a ridable trailer, "Pink Floydd," that he pulled with his lawn mower.
Frank lived most of his life in Chester County, PA. He recently, six years ago, moved to Milton, DE, with Kay. He made numerous friends, devoured books, and traveled with Kay.
He will always be remembered as an active, selfless man who was devoted to his family. Frank wasn't a perfect man, but it is often remarked that they broke the mold with him. Use the downhill Frank!
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
