George Caldwell Jr.'s Obituary
George Caldwell Jr. (61), passed away on May 9, 2025. Born on November 13, 1963, in Indiana, George was the son of Doris (Keeley) Johnson and stepson of William F. Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Tim Caldwell.
George was a graduate of New Albany High School in 1981, he then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the following summer. Over the course of a distinguished 20-year career, George served in various capacities, including machine gunner, recruiter, infantry unit leader, and billet designator. His career in the Marines took him across the world and he served in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm, earning the respect and admiration of those he served alongside. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 2001, after a life dedicated to duty and service.
Known for his “wandering spirit,” George was an adventurer at heart. His family recalls his love for the ocean and his rather spontaneous nature—often packing up to explore new places on a whim. This love for the sea may have been the leading cause for his move to Sussex County, Delaware in 2015, where he made his home by the coast.
George is survived by his siblings: Candace Smith, Doug Caldwell (Marcia), Frank Johnson (Cindy), and Dale Johnson (Cindy), as well as his former wife, Debra Caldwell. He will also be missed by his friends and colleagues.
May George’s adventurous spirit continue to live on in those who were close to him.
